computers, although they had several weeks to explore the software giant's network, sources said.

I call this fudalitious In general anything that's bad for msft enterprise story is good for unix/linux

Who and why.

Industrial espionage. Having source code would give tremendous first mover advantage if court rules
in future that msft must reveal source.

Mafia or terroists or nasties.
Having source code could reveal many other holes in the secret binaries of Bill's Oses. Any company
using msft with external access is not at a quantum larger unknown risk.
