Ref- < Willamette "delays" > In early February Intel demoed the First Silicon of Willamette capable of running at 1.5GHz. Intel began hoping that Willamette could be introduced in Q3 with first silicon. Experience should have told Intel otherwise. Pentium, Pentium MMX and Pentium II architectures, took a year from First Processor Silicon to Customer Systems. Willamette apparently needed a major new stepping, which also boosted its speed to 2GHz, as demoed this fall. However this was definitely a delay, which is just as well, since a problem was found in the chipset which would have prevented shipments in Q3 anyway. However Intel has a faster part and a more solid product. We hope that there will be no more surprises. Unfortunately late Q4 is a bad time to introduce a brand new architecture, since it can easily kill off sales of the existing P3 in the critical Christmas season. So most likely the P4 introduction will be a low key introduction. The major objective will be PR issues, to save face after the embarrassment of the recall of the 1.13GHz P3, and to regain the speed crown.
