Sonny--

I was of course joking, in a sense. As they do themselves. Actually they don't dislike the Germans as much as they dislike the French, and (at least up here) they dislike the Swiss most of all.

It is true, though, that in the broad sense the Germans and the Italians have rather different ideas about vacations. The Germans for the most part tend to be rough-and-ready, enjoy camping and the like, wear shorts and sandals (with socks, always) even in January, and are not especially liberal spenders. Italians, when traveling, insist on comforts they may not even have at home and are willing to pay for them. Style is everything.

The French are picky. It's said that they only travel to confirm their view that everything's so much better in France (there was once an extremely funny Art Buchwald column on the subject).
