Here is a post I made on the G&K board

For those of you that read Clayton Christensen's book "The Innovator's Dilemma" I have come across what I believe is a classic disruptive technology that could play out in a very big way over the next decade. For most of you, this is not a company to consider but I am going to take a position and see how it plays itself out.
The name of the company is Transmeta and it is a maker of microprocessors that are slower than both AMD and Intel's current offering, but have a radical new power saving design that allows notebook computers to run for much longer periods of time with much less heat. This benefit removes the need for a cooling fan. It also doubles battery life. This is a big deal for laptops and allows the manufacturers to reduce bulk and weight. Also, the company may be able to find new applications for the chip (named Caruso) that need processing power that sips battery juice and does not overheat. PDAs "spring" to mind.
There are many many examples of how disruptive technologies develop in the book. My favorite example was how the mini steel mill industry disrupted integrated steel companies business. A high tech example would be how Compact Flash has disrupted the disk drive industry. Anyway, Intel has nothing to fear (yet) but it should be a fun ride.
Transmeta is coming public next week. Pray for me..:)http://www2.ipo.com/ipoinfo/profile.asp?p=RED2&c=0001001193
