Evening Cos
"That goes back to first principles: is it okay to question everything? This is the tenet, Steve. To be comfortable here, I'd think you have to accept that tenet is true or else you are on a mission. But THAT mission is a bleak mission of conversion. Maybe all of us are on that mission or we wouldn't post at all."

Well I for one think it certainly is acceptable to question everything, but I don't think that is quite the same thing as having an a priori assumption that everything is questionable. In other words, if you have already decided that truth is unattainable or unknowable, then the game is fixed isn't it? That is really no different than those who decide beforehand that they already know the truth. This is what I was eluding to in my earlier post regarding "total" agnosticism. For instance if one declared that knowing the truth was in theory possible but then turned around and demanded that all such claims must be subject to the verification principal (definitional or empirical), then all claims about God would be eliminated. Of course Ayer was left in a very uncomfortable position when it was realized that the verification principal itself was not empirically verifiable. But hey you have to start somewhere. I'm unconvinced that the attempt to rescue the theory was at all successful.

So when you say " I'd think you have to accept that tenet is true or else you are on a mission" then I would ask, after asking the hard questions, is there any hope of reaching an answer? If yes then we are on the same page at least. If no then is this whole exercise in "truth searching" just a thinly disguised excuse for being left alone to do whatever one wants? Wada ya tink?
good evening, I'm probably gone till Sunday night.
Have a good weekend
Greg
