Perhaps he didn't understand the meaning of the word rue? I would like to think that. Or perhaps he is afraid of pain. If you allow yourself to rue- there is a lot of ruing you can do. If you don't want to feel pain, you can't open yourself up to the pain of the world. I found that kind of pain almost unbearable as a teenager. I thought I should be DOING something. And I tried to do things- like writing letters for amnesty international, and writing letters for the whales and the dolphins, and marching in protest marches- but things never seemed to get any better. It was discouraging. I can understand why people wouldn't want to empathize with the pain in the world- what I don't understand is how they effectively block it (if they truly do).
