dell will sell amd if amd is what people want

It is not nearly so simple. Look at Gateway or Compaq - there is real evidence that increasing numbers of people who want Athlons. But Dell (quite rightly) place a high value on their special relationship with Intel, which has served them well so far.

When Dell sell AMD it will not be because people are asking for AMD but because people are refusing to buy Intel, which is still some way off.

Having said that, I think that if Intel announce that P4 has slipped to Dec 31 then Dell will be forced to make a move. They are going to have a bad enough quarter as it is, with no competetive stocking stuffers lined up. I doubt we will see then capitulate until next year, but it is now inevitable IMO.
