Nader Factor:

More than half of Ralph Nader’s supporters say they may change their minds before Election Day, a very high level of potential defections.

And among those who have a second choice, twice as many of them say it’s Al Gore rather than George W. Bush.

Whether Nader makes a difference in this close election still is not clear. He has precious little support, a steady 3 percent in ABCNEWS tracking polls. Among his supporters, 56 percent say that if he weren’t running they’d pick Gore, 23 percent Bush; the rest would sit it out.

Overall, just 44 percent of Nader’s supporters say they’re definitely for him; 56 percent may change their minds. Significantly, the lion’s share of those potential defectors — more than six in 10 of them — say there’s a good chance they’ll switch.
