i understand intel recently said that their tie in with rmbs was a mistake.

You are incorrect. What Intel said that using RDRAM for Timna was a mistake when prices for RDRAM were still high. But they did say that RDRAM was the right choice for high performance PCs (were RDRAM price is not much of an issue). As RDRAM prices come down (and they have; in less than a year RDRAM has gone from $1000 to $150), then they will penetrate more and more and deeper into the PCs. So Intel still says that RDRAM is the best memory for the present and the future.
