Raymond, I agree with you. There is a new breed of boxes on the horizon providing just what SP's can use to feed the IT guys. They combine services from DS0 to OC192, gig Ethernet, ATM, IP and SONET all in a smaller footprint. There are likely to be a dozen companies that make these products, but here is a recent deal and commencement of deployment that better articulates my comment. astralpoint.com In the case of Ciena, they may have made the comments that you refer to, but in 1999, they spent the equivalent (at today's stock price) of 3 billion dollars on a small company by the name of Omnia that would attempt to do this at the customer premise. They have written the company's expected revenue off at this point. Perhaps that is why the CEO recently stated that he was not impressed with any start-ups out there....he feels a bit burned. Other companies, Appian and Quantumbridge, are taking different approaches to the last mile than are presently available. It will be interesting to see how they fare in acquiring customers. Take a look at this from SBC. It is the only area in which capital expenditures are increasing at SBC. It is again providing the exact services that i first alluded to. I fully expect other SP's to do the same. sbc.com I expect that we will see this spending pattern take shape going forward. These are some guys that I know. They put a spin on what they are doing that attempts to indicate that they are alone in this effort, despite the dozens of others in the development process, yet it does describe the size of the expected cap-ex and reasons for deployment over the next few years. batv.com tp
