pirate, I am not so sure that EMC owns the largest % of the storage market for a single player. I can't find the numbers, but I'll bet SUNW has that distinction.

I do follow Moore's criteria as precisely as possible. I do not see EMC meeting the Gorilla criteria in terms of market share, barriers to entry nor open proprietary architecture.

I really haven't decided what I think about EMC as a Gorilla candidate. Without the criteria above, I am not sure they can be a candidate. VRTS requires more study, as I am not current on the details of their technology.

VRTS's strategy of selling software that runs on multiple platforms is not a winning strategy, imo. They will get some market share, but the approach results in mediocre performance, reliability, and security.

I got some thinking to do. Thanks, pirate, for stimulating the juices.
