Al Gore for President

IN THE Nov. 7 presidential election, we favor Al Gore. By virtue of experience, capacity and positions on the issues, he is the better qualified candidate. In a dangerous world, as we have recently been reminded this is, Mr. Gore offers leadership without need of on-the-job training. He also offers the more responsible fiscal approach.........
But THEN they have THESE WORDS to say about their supposedly unhesitating support of Gore, much farther down the column, of course:
We are by no means blind to the risks of a Gore presidency. His political clumsiness and know-it-all manner raise questions about his ability to inspire the country and work with Congress. His defense of President Clinton's indefensible moral and legal lapses, and his own role in the fundraising excesses of 1996, move into the realm of understatement Mr. Gore's characterization of himself as an "imperfect messenger" for reform. His bench -- his team of advisers on international and domestic policy -- is unimpressive. There is a risk, too, that he would meddle in economic matters better left alone, and thereby derail growth..
Nonetheless, we come to our choice without hesitation......etc.. ********************
Yeah... when the Post has to make these kinds of caveats to their endorsement of Gore, it is SAY QUITE A BIT!!
Now let's review their concerns:
"His political clumsiness and know-it-all manner raise questions about his ability to inspire the country and work with Congress."
So they think he's uninspiring and can't work with congress.. That equates to 4 more years of partisanship and congressional investigations. While NONE OF GORE's MAJOR PROGRAMS GET PASSED and social security reform is delayed 4 more CRUCIAL YEARS.
"His defense of President Clinton's indefensible moral and legal lapses, and his own role in the fundraising excesses of 1996, move into the realm of understatement Mr. Gore's characterization of himself as an "imperfect messenger" for reform."
So the post believes his committment to "reform" is unimpressive, does it? Well, hell their words can speak for themselves and they are condemning..
"His bench -- his team of advisers on international and domestic policy -- is unimpressive."
So I guess Al Gore is planning on running foreign and domestic affairs all be his lonesome self.
Maybe he'll bring in a bunch of youngsters fresh out of divinity school to pray for smooth government operations and peace in the world.
But the most alarming comment the Post endorsement had to make was this:
"There is a risk, too, that he would meddle in economic matters better left alone, and thereby derail growth."
Even the Post acknowledges that a Gore administration will equate to "risky" policymaking.
