OEMs contracting with NEC Corp. shouldn't expect last week's patent licensing deal between NEC and Rambus Inc. to affect their DRAM prices, given that the Japanese chip maker will cease paying royalties on these devices as of Jan 1.

This was settled prior to NEC or Hitachi signing with Rambus. The SDRAM and DDR contracts and licenses for both companies expire at the end of this year - even if they return to the RAM business independent of Elpida.

The issue of whether or not the foundry may be controlled by NEC or Hitachi isn't germane - NEC's and Hitachi's contracts and licenses with Rambus on SDRAM and DDR also expire at the end of the year.
