Re: AMD should have started planning its counter offensive [against P4] a year ago.

Isn't that what clawhammer is for? AMD plans that P4 will be facing a 64 bit processor that has similar MHZ, higher IPC, and is 64 bit vs. 32 bit. It will have a smaller die size and use less power than P4 (despite being 64 bit instead of 32 bit) so both the CPU and its infrastructure will cost less to produce. It uses DDR, a higher performing and lower cost memory than P4's Rambus.

No guarantee they'll get there ahead of Intel (and certainly no guarantee that Intel will get its necessary .13 copper ahead of AMD) but AMD most certainly has a plan. It also looks like Intel will be copying AMD's use of DDR, but AMD has a huge head start in the chipset / motherboard arena.

To me it sounds like a great plan - now they just have to continue executing.

Regards,

Dan
