Ref < The potential for the packaging material to induce soft errors due to alpha particle emissions was first pointed out by Gordon Moore many years ago. Just giving credit where credit is due.>

Correction:
The impact of Cosmic Rays in creating circuit malfunction was found by NASA in early 60's on the first communication sattelites.

In the mid 70's Intel began to notice soft errors on memories, and this phenomena baffled its engineers. Gordon Moore remembered the data from NASA, and speculated that Cosmic Rays were again the cause. Two engineers at Intel , Tim Mays and Murray Woods were assigned to check out this possibility. They found that it wasnt Cosmic Rays, but Alpha Particles from Chip packaging, that were the culprit.
