The potential for the packaging material to induce soft errors due to alpha particle emissions was first pointed out by Gordon Moore many years ago. Just giving credit where credit is due. I have heard the story that Intel actually has cornered the market on the critical supply of low alpha lead by buying up the only two sources where it is currently mined. I heard they also had to agree to make it available to competitors. I can't vouch for the validity of this but that is what I heard. You may want to ask some of your Intel cronies.
