A lengthy delay in delivering many of the nation's 75 million doses of influenza vaccine has alarmed many patients, angered some physicians and caused a run-up in prices in some instances.

Compounding manufacturing problems at vaccine makers is the increased demand for protection from an illness that contributes to the deaths of 20,000 mostly elderly Americans a year and sends 110,000 to the hospital. That demand has more than tripled since the mid-1980s because of
