You have the opportunity to write calls many times against a leap. If the leap goes far out enough, you can eventually recoup the entire cost of the leap while still holding it, then be able to either sell or exercise it...with a little luck and a cooperative market that is generally willing to accede to your plans and wishes.
Good explanations of this strategy abound all over SI and Yahoo.
