General Magic Announces Five New magicTalk Personalities; magicTalk Personalities Showcase General Magic's Patent-Pending Dialog Development Methodology

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 30, 2000--General Magic, Inc. (Nasdaq:GMGC), a premier voice application service provider, and a pioneer in the creation of personality-rich voice interfaces, today announced the design of five new magicTalk(TM) Personalities. These new Personalities showcase General Magic's industry-leading expertise developing interactive voice user interfaces (VUIs) for businesses that enable them to offer superior customer service over the telephone with the aid of personality-rich virtual attendants. General Magic created the characters "Jen, Zach, Tom, Greg and Jim" to demonstrate the power of the magicTalk development methodology and the role personality plays in voice user interface design. These new magicTalk Personalities along with the original, already popular, magicTalk Personality, Mary, will be demonstrated at VOX 2000 in Baltimore on November 30 and SpeechTEK in New York City on November 2.

With more than four years experience designing voice user interfaces and a patent pending on its dialog development methodology, General Magic has amassed significant linguistic equity that it leverages in developing superior voice solutions for its business customers. The five new magicTalk Personalities created by General Magic build upon extensive research into social behavior and the personality expectations surrounding individual communication styles.

"Personality is key to designing great voice user interfaces," said Bill Byrne, director of speech and language at General Magic. "At General Magic we've succeeded in bringing together a team of creative and talented linguists whose understanding of how spoken discourse works allows us to bring out personality in voice applications."

The announcement of the magicTalk Personalities is the latest step in General Magic's innovative design of voice applications for leading enterprise, telecommunications, and Internet companies, providing businesses with a powerful new tool by which to better interact with customers, build brand loyalty and increase the amount of time their customers spend using their services.

With General Magic's voice solutions, businesses can provide their customers with voice solutions matched to the company brand and services, allowing companies to match their visual brand with an auditory brand. For example, an online music e-tailer may select a young, friendly, energetic voice personality for mobile access to its services, while a bank or stock brokerage may choose a more formal, task-oriented personality to allow customers to carry out financial transactions over the telephone.
