PC Sales in Second Week of October Rise a Slight 6 Percent October 30, 2000 (TOKYO) -- PC sales in the second week of October 2000 (Oct. 2 - 8) increased by 6 percent in volume and by 7.7 percent in value from the previous week.
When compared with the same week of the previous year (Oct. 4 -10, 1999), they increased by 53 percent in volume and by 35.0 percent in value. The average retail price rose to 179,859 yen from the previous week's 177,071 yen, up 2,788 yen. (108.32 yen = US$1)
These figures were based on research by GfK Japan Ltd., an information service firm dealing with POS data collected from 3,200 mass retailers of household electric appliances, and compiled by Nikkei Market Access.
In the second week effects of Windows Millennium Edition (Windows ME) began to show, and yet, the growth lacks vigor, just like the previous week, which marked a 6.7 percent increase.
Following Sony Corp., Fujitsu Ltd. has been increasing its sales since the launch of PC products with built-in Windows ME, but NEC Corp. has yet to have enough deliveries to replace its old models with Windows ME models. Currently, retailers seem to be maintaining the sales volume at the expense of significant price reductions. Overall, PC sales are unlikely to grow until the market arrival of NEC products with Windows ME.
Sales in the same week of the previous year rose to an increase of 53 percent. It was for the first time in approximately two months that comparisons with the same week of the previous year surpassed 50 percent.
