The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Oct. 28, edition that the
Russian government minister in charge of the mining sector has renewed his
assault on Canadian investment in Russia, this time with an attack on
Barrick Gold, which he said should be barred from bidding for the licence
to mine Sukhoi Log in southeastern Siberia. The Globe's John Helmer writes
that Minister of Natural Resources Boris Yatskevich says, "Russian mining
companies work more effectively." He says if the Irkutsk regional
government holds an open tender for the Sukhoi Log deposit, as officials
have been promising for almost three years, Barrick Gold is the "only
company" that will win. Mr. Yatskevich says he has recommended the federal
government overrule the Irkutsk regional government, and restrict the
Sukhoi Log tender to Russian companies. According to unnamed sources, Mr.
Yatskevich's antiCanadian stance is likely to be a serious talking point
when Russian President Vladimir Putin visits Prime Minister Jean Chretien
in Ottawa in December.
