If you cut back on what education provides- and expect parents to pick up the slack(what you term "responsibility)- when they clearly have no time, because they are busy working all the time to support the glorious economy- I think you will have a wrenching dislocation, that will harm children.

I blame our whole societal emphasis on things, and material wealth, for "forcing" two parent households to work such long hours they shouldn't even have dogs, let alone children. This emphasis on materialism I won't pin on either the liberals or the conservatives- but when I hear hymns in praise of capitalism, forgive me if I don't join in.

I agree with you about testing of teachers- and in fact many teachers in the unions agree with you. I think that is one problem with the union- that in an effort to protect teachers it protects bad teachers- but in my experience I haven't seen a great number of bad teachers- and I've been in 7 schools heavily involved, and tangentially been in at least 15 others.
