I've had an AMD K6 233 Mhz system for 3 years and I've never once had any kind of compatibility issue.

I'm currently running running Windows Millenium with the complete Office 2000 Professional suite and I also have the complete WordPefect Suite installed. I've had no problems.

My kid is a heavy games user and installs any game he can get his hands on. He has used them all with no problems.

As we're now seeing more and more games that need more power and better graphics to run at optimum performance I'm currently looking at upgrading as well, and will buy the best bang for the buck which appears to be AMD with the newly announced 760 chipset.

I'm going to wait until I can get the 760 and will probably go with the 1 Ghz Athlon initially and a motherboard capable of faster chips once the prices come down on the 1.3 Ghz or higher.
