Mary, you have Mr. Welch pretty well pegged. I remember several years ago, back when I was in business school, when Mr. Welch came to visit us. Everyone had done a group paper on corporate cultures. My group was one of six selected to present their paper to Mr. Welch to have him critique. In front of the whole rest of the business school. 'Corporate culture', IMO, is pretty much a BS topic to write about. And thus, most of my group's paper a lot of silly buzz words that were popular at the time, a la "Search For Excellence." This went over very well with our professor. It didn't go over so well with Mr. Welch. He sat there in front of the whole school, my friends and I at the front with him. He threw all the papers on the table. "This is a bunch of bull sh#t." This was followed by many more disparaging words, including the F-word more than I have ever heard from anyone outside of Coach K. Mr. Welch did not tolerate BS well. And GE has been the benefactor of that attitude.
