Look, if you think that all MSFT bought was a passive investment with no other benefits then you and I are on two different planets. I don't have a clue how to reply to your argument because IMO it borders on the ridiculous. All I can reply is, these deals are made all the time and for very shrewd business reasons. I guess we agree to disagree - politely.

Well they obviously hoped that they would get a foot in the door for Windows CE in the interactive TV market place. But AT&T were shrewd, and didn't give them any guarantees, and in fact because of all the delays in the Microsoft TV platform (derived from their other 'shrewd' investment of $500M to purchase WebTV) AT&T has chosen LBRT, Microsoft's main (Larry Ellison/Wind Inside) driven competition.

In the mean time, because (IMO) Microsoft didn't listen to their WebTV customers, that platform is struggling, and will probably disappear as true internet appliances materialize that can do all that WebTV did, and more. That's where WIND will win big.

So I still maintain that without hindsight, the $5B was a risky investment, with a poor return for that risk.

You may continue to disagree, but that's what makes life interesting. I'm sorry you think my arguments border on the ridiculous, but that alone is a tautological reason for ignoring them.
