I decided to go the hardware method of internet security. This works well for dsl and cable modems.

SMC has a product called barricade. It prevents connections from the internet in while allowing you to connect out to the internet.

For those more detail oriented, it is a small box with an ethernet connection on the back and a 4 port ethernet hub on the front. It configures via web pages. It has DHCP, and NAT. It also has a parallel port for turning your printer into a network printer. My multi-function printer gave the little box heartburn, so I am not using that (I did get it to work).

It does have ways of allowing selected traffic through for the game players out there.

Runs about $150. It passed the symantec test with flying colors. And I did get 3 unauthorized hits within the first hour.

Unfortunately, it claims to be 10/100, but it kicked all of my connections to 10 and they are all capable of doing 100.

All and all I like it.
