<< THE SA gold industry's long-awaited consolidation could occur sooner than expected, if analysts' interpretations of comments by AngloGold CE Bobby Godsell at the weekend are correct. >>

I found this statement a little weird, since the gold industry in South Africa has consolidated more than any other country.

Remember when there were 40+ firms listed on the JSE (Blyvoorricht, Bracken, Buffelsfontein, Beatrix, Deelkraal, Doorfontein, Dreifontein, Eastvaal, East Rand, Elandrand, Free State, Grootvlei, Hartiebeestfontein, Joel, Kinross, Kloof, Leslie, Loraine, Ranfontein, Southvaal, Stilfontein, St. Helena, Unisel, Vaal Reefs, West Rand, Western Deeps, Winkelhaak, and other that I don't recall)

RSA is really down to just Anglogold, Gold Fields, Harmony, and Durban.
Few others (Avgold, Western Areas, etc ..) seem viable.
