EarthShell Sandwich Containers to Enter Final Validation for McDonald's Big Mac
BALTIMORE, M.D.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 23, 2000--Innovators of patented, environmentally preferable foodservice packaging, EarthShell Corporation announced today that EarthShell® Big Mac® sandwich containers have been shipped to Chicago for what the company believes will be the final validation testing for the products. EarthShell officials expect final validation to begin at the end of this month and conclude within two weeks. This validation process is scheduled to occur in a limited number of stores, and following a successful outcome, expansion of product use will be announced.

``The EarthShell Big Mac sandwich containers now in Chicago meet all environmental requirements as previously reported,'' said Simon K. Hodson, Chief Executive Officer of EarthShell Corporation. ``While it has taken longer than anticipated to reach this point, we are extremely confident in the product being produced and that this product will meet McDonald's expectations,'' said Mr. Hodson.

EarthShell Big Mac sandwich containers have been in continuous use in 128 stores and this has been ongoing since late April. Recently, EarthShell Corporation announced that validation timelines were extended to develop new commercial sources of FDA-compliant PCW recycled fiber. The PCW fiber, which comes from recycled school milk cartons and juice boxes, is just a small part of the ingredients, which primarily consist of abundant limestone and renewable starch.

EarthShell Packaging is considered an environmentally preferable alternative made from new-to-the world composite material, which consists primarily of abundant limestone and starch. It uses less total energy and results in low greenhouse gas emissions when compared to traditional packaging. EarthShell Packaging is strong and provides good insulation. It biodegrades in marine and composting environments, and is recyclable through composting.
