Ed, I am going to stay optimistic on this one. Alcatel reports tomorrow morning and any good news on that front will surely help. It is not guaranteed but maybe the negatives are already priced in anyways.

I think the stock will rally into the earnings. Many companies have disputed the slowdown story. I think we are close to tilting the balance towards people starting to seriously doubt the theory.
I think it is easy for the situation to change to positive while the negatives are already priced in to most of the stocks.

There was an RHK research story this morning about optical spending---bullish. In addition I read a NORTEL exec's comment that the inventory issue behind them. That is more confirmation that we are not getting to any major spending halt or serious slowdown.

I would bet that any telcos that can spend will accelerate the deployment of equipment so that they can increase their leads and make it harder for the upstarts. As a result overall spending would increase as the big players do more of it. That is certainly logical.
