I like the post, J.Fieb. I got hit with a virus for the first time Thursday night, was briefly back up and running late Friday, but then went down again, until now. The following scenario was what happened in case anyone gets hit with anything like this, it might help you get back up and running sooner. Your post reminded me of some discussions I had on the George Gilder thread in June 1999, regarding viruses, computer to computer communications, and programs becoming autonomous.
1) Opened attachment, then modem and lan card stopped working, graphics card stopped working and my Sony Vaio slowed way, way down, and it wouldn't shut off unless physically pushing the off.
2)Reformatted and ran recovery disk. Worked great until I reloaded a few files I had saved. The virus reinfected the computer.
3) Ran through the same reformat and recovery processs, but this time it didn't work. After doing this 3 times, I realized the recovery disk had to be in the computer when it was turned on, not put in after it came on. But it still didn't work, after trying two times.
4) It turned out, when I booted the recovery disk after the computer was already on, the virus had jumped onto the driver floppy disk that I used to install the Netgear Adapter Card.
5) Finally did the recovery disk, without installing the driver for the adapter and wah lah, it finally worked. Now I am downloading the new driver off of the internet. Boy those viruses are sneaky.
