Well, the FCC and Congress have really done it to the individual investor. It seems pretty clear that we started with a local monopoly and competitive LD. We will end with a regional monopoly for local and long distance. I wonder, when it's all said and done, how much money we will lose to get to this disasterous result. I hope voice over IP crushes the regional bells. On the brighter side, it does seem clear that the bells are vulnerable on the business side and WCII has done a great job. But it seems reasonable to assume a number of CLECs will fail. TGNT looks pretty bad. The data CLECs are on oxygen. How did it all go so wrong? We had a real chance to open this whole thing up and it soured over the last 2 years. Perhaps the FCC should have mandated a low to 0 price on the local loop to get this going - I don't know. It is well documented that after competition is introduced, consolidation follows. I just hate to see the bells getting stronger.
