WindNet(TM) Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) product suites.

Finally WIND announces something that I can add to this board from my personal insight. I work for a broadband data carrier company. We have a high-speed data network that is part of the Internet across the United States, Europe and Asia.

One area that we, and most other companies in this business, would like to get into is video multicasting. This is a killer app in which we already have more customer inquiries than our network is currently equipped to service. To run a good multicast network in volume (so that is scales well to millions of customers), you need two things 1.) a way of prioritizing your traffic. This prioritization will allow your time sensitive traffic, such as a video stream, to have priority over traffic that is not so time sensitive. And 2.) you need a very high-speed network backbone.

Today, the state of the art for providing the fastest backbone is MPLS. The current protocols for making this technology work are the standards-based RSVP, LDP and CR-LDP, along with a label management function.

WindRiver’s new product announcement addresses this booming new market squarely and will likely become an enormous profit center as the demand for MPLS networking equipment continues.
