On 10/25, the day before JDSU came out w/ earnings, JDSU closed at 71, just where it is today. On 10/25 SDLI closed at 234, 13 pts. higher than it closed today, hence the widening of the gap.

It appears that to a certain extent, both stocks are being shorted independently and the arbs really are not able to control the spread anymore.

I would not be surprised if there are people out there shorting SDLI that are unaware that each day that passes, the closing of the merger nears. Any short just shorting SDLI blindly because optical is getting clobbered will wake up one morning and feel like they were driving at 100 mph and someone dropped a brick wall right in their path.
