Betty,

I made my first holiday purchase this weekend.

No, it wasn't the $1,599.00 512MB type II CompactFlash
by Simple Technology, rather a Kodak DC280 zoom.

I purchased this for my sister-in-law who has a birthday
in late November, so it is a combined b-day and Christmas
gift. Her S.O. is a network manager for Hewlett Packard. I
looked at the PhotoSmart 315 but felt limited by the lack
of zoom or macro. The camera also has relatively simple
optics and I wasn't as impressed with the image quality of
the kit despite the relatively rapid cycle time and 2.1 MP
resolution it boasts. Well, I hope she isn't offended.

I liked the Kodak because of the zoom and the solid feel.
It is a bit heavy to be honest. The camera can shoot off
three pics in relatively rapid fire before resting. The
image resolution is quite good and I made some test prints
and was very happy with the results. The package cost $399.99
at Wolf Camera and included the 20MB SanDisk CompactFlash that
is private labelled by Kodak. I substituted it for a 32 MB
CompactFlash card which holds 51 high resolution pictures and
kept the 20 MB card for my collection. The camera also
has USB connectivity and 4 NiMH AA batteries with a recharger.

The only drawback with the Kodak was the smallish LCD with
relatively low resolution (compared to my Epson which has a
very impressive high res screen) and the lack of a lens thread for
add on filters, etc... Also, the camera seems to take a long
time to cycle off if you have photos to be processsed.

All-in-all I am happy with the purchase. The newer Kodaks
don't seem to have the same rugged construction until you
reach the high end. As a starter digital camera for her I
am sure it will have a very good useful lifespan.
