Hi John Walliker; Another mention of the technical problems with RDRAM:

While it is true that RDRAMs also offer a low supply voltage of 2.5 V, Intel nevertheless abandoned their Rambus plans for mobile chipsets at an early stage. The notebook chipset developed by Intel under the code name of Greendale has never been used due to technical problems. Apart from thermal issues, the high frequencies used with RDRAM also caused problems. Due to the high degree of packaging density, interference with adjacent components was unacceptable. And to top it all, RDRAM memory is rather costly.

You can go ahead and say that the rumors about Rambus have not been verified by Intel or Rambus, but it doesn't matter. They haven't said what the problems are, so the rest of us have no choice but to speculate.

What I have written is what is commonly believed in industry, and probably wall street too. It seems to me that the cancellation was well before it became obvious to Intel management (who are stupid) that RDRAM would never fall in price, so I don't think you can blame it on high RDRAM prices. If you have some other, better (for RMBS), explanation for why the mobile RDRAM solution was canned by Intel back in Fall of '99, let's hear it.
