Sort of makes you crazy reading so many varying opinions on optical networking. To read the article you posted you'd think there was no end to growth. To read Barron's you'd think the sky was falling and most potential buyers on the verge of bankruptcy. Today I got an engineer's view of the state of the optical network. Tomorrow I'll hear Dr. John McQuillan, conference sponsor, give an overview of the network, followed by the keynote address by John Sidgmore, co-chairman of MCI/WCOM. I'm quite sure I'll have a better feel for the industry by the time they're through. No one here doubts the growth in optical components. In fact at the end of the symposium on the optical network I asked about the market for Raman amplification and was told "potentially as big as EDFAs, though not this year, more likely a year or two out." I can live with that since EDFAs are still growing like gangbusters. More tomorrow. . . Pat
