Ref XML

If two legacy systems are communicating data between applications there is no advantage of using XML over standard data formatting techniques, such as the ones that you mentioned. However, if a company is communicating data to hundreds of other companies, each with a multitude of different systems, then the task of mapping data formats becomes very time consuming (even if each individual data formatting is not that complex).
This is where XML has the advantage, because it incorporates an agreed data formatting/ description tags that can be understood within a particular industry (eg auto industry). By communicating data in the xml format companies are able to transmit purchase orders etc in a format that is clearly defined and understandable by all companies in the industry using that particular XML format. This greatly simplifies and speeds up the task of connecting hundreds of companies so that data can be transmitted from one company application (eg MRP) to hundreds of other company applications (eg supplier company MRP systems).
