The survey by the Tomas Rivera Policy Institute in Claremont, California, a Latino-oriented think tank, questioned more than 2,000 registered Hispanic voters in California, Illinois, Texas, Florida and New York, the most heavily Hispanic states.

The poll found that in four of the five states, Hispanics favor Democrat Gore over Bush by wide margins: 63-17 percent in California, 65-14 in New York, 56-23 in Illinois and 54-29 in Bush's home state of Texas. The rest of those polled either favored another candidate or were undecided.

In Florida, where Hispanic voters are about evenly split between Cubans and non-Cubans, Bush was favored by 56-31 percent, the poll found.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

Hispanics are the fastest-growing ethnic group in the United States and represent 10 percent of the voting-age population. They are expected to overtake African-Americans in five years as the country's largest minority.
