OT: Only 3% Of Japanese Youths Have Computers
Tuesday, October 31, 2000
TOKYO (Nikkei)--A relatively small share of young
people in Japan have their own personal computers,
according to survey results of Japan Entertainment
Network KK, which operates a satellite cartoon channel.

The survey, carried out in October through December
1999, targeted 7,752 persons from seven to 18 years of
age in 14 countries and regions in the Asia-Pacific
region, including South Korea, Thailand and Indonesia.

Only 3% of those surveyed in Japan have their own PCs,
placing the country 10th on the list. South Korea was in
first place at 33% and Singapore was in second place at
20%.

On the other hand, 20% of youths in Japan have their
own mobile telephones, placing the country second on
the list behind Hong Kong, where the share was 25%.

Mobile phone ownership in Japan was particularly high
among those in the age range of 16-18 years, where the
share was 56%, the highest of the countries and regions
surveyed.
