You need to know what "an establishment of religion" is. It means that the state pays money to the church, enforces tithes, and in general makes a particular brand of superstition part of the law. The establishment clause would better be called "the anti-establishment clause" which protects the people from having any form of worship imposed on them by Congress as was the practice in England and Scotland and in most of the American colonies before the Constitution was amended.
