NOTE - French telecoms equipment maker Alcatel (SBF:CGEP) (NYSE:ALA) said in a statement that within its 50 percent rise in overall turnover, its four telecom segments showed sales growth of 57 percent.

Operating profit from its telecoms activities rose 92 percent over the three months.

For the nine months to end-September, sales were up 42 percent versus the year-earlier period, operating profit rose 126 percent and net income nearly tripled. Sales and operating profits from the four telecoms divisions rose 47 percent and 121 percent respectively.

Alcatel CEO Serge Tchuruk said in a statement that the group was revising up its expectations for 2000 revenue growth in telecoms to above 35 percent and expected operating profit to grow twice as fast.

He also said the group expected 2001 sales growth to be above market with early indications showing growth of at least 25 percent in its telecoms business.

North America contributed 26.9 to net sales. Europe accounted for 51.5 percent, Asia 6.9 percent and the rest of the world 14.7 percent.

Gross margin was stable over the third quarter at 30.1 percent.
