I haven't been able to find any news that would explain the jump, but it was welcome. It's likely that the recent weakness is due in part to tax-loss selling. There was a related story last week:

siliconinvestor.com

Note that the story mentions that RGR surpassed S&W this last summer as the largest handgun manufacturer in the U.S.
