Brocade and Nortel Networks Complete Interoperability Testing to InternetworkBrocade-Based SANs Across the Nortel Networks Optical Internet
Companies Verify Product Compatibility to Interconnect Brocade-Based SANs Over
Nortel Networks Metropolitan Area Networks
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. (Brocade(R)) (Nasdaq: BRCD), the leading provider of Storage Area Networking infrastructure, and Nortel Networks* announced today that the two companies have completed joint interoperability tests verifying the compatibility of Brocade Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure solutions with Nortel Networks metropolitan-area fiber optic transport technology. The product compatibility enables mutual Brocade and Nortel Networks customers to internetwork Brocade-based SANs over Nortel Networks-based metropolitan area networks (MANs), extending the reach of SANs over high speed fiber optic networks.
The interoperability testing, performed jointly by Brocade and Nortel Networks, verifies compatibility of Brocade SilkWorm(R) Fibre Channel fabric switches with the Nortel Networks OPTera* Metro 5200 Multiservice Platform. Kanatek, a systems integrator partner, also played a key role in ensuring the success of the solutions testing between Brocade and Nortel Networks. Brocade SilkWorm switches connect servers with storage devices through a SAN, providing a highly available and scalable environment for storage applications. Supporting metropolitan optical technologies from Nortel Networks, ADVA Optical networking, and ONI Systems, Brocade provides the world's leading foundation for internetworked SANs, supporting applications such as disaster recovery; high-speed remote data mirroring; data replication; centralized data backup; digital content distribution; business continuity; systems and storage consolidation; and storage outsourcing.
The interoperability tests involved rigorous real-world fibre connectivity testing with stressful operating conditions. With the use of the Brocade Extended fabric feature, hosts are able to access storage at full Fibre Channel speed. Internetworking Brocade-based SANs through Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200 and 5100 Multiservice Platforms allows customers to access data on a storage subsystem that may be located across town at performance levels that emulate direct fiber-attached storage.
"The interoperability of our high-performance Local Internet solutions with Brocade's leading storage networking infrastructure allows our enterprise customers to optimize the storage infrastructure and utilize storage resources in different locations for key services such as remote data mirroring, disaster recovery, and server consolidation. In addition, the combination of Brocade-based SANs and Nortel Networks Managed Optical Services enables our service provider customers to offer new types of services, such as outsourced storage, through an optical network," said Brian McFadden, vice president, Metro Optical Solutions, Nortel Networks.
"As the leading provider of a reliable, scalable networking foundation for storage, we are committed to offering our customers the widest range of options for extending SANs over metropolitan and wide area networks. We are pleased to work with Nortel Networks to provide seamless interoperability of our respective solutions," said Jack Cuthbert, Brocade vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "As storage requirements continue to grow exponentially, extending SANs over optical networks increases the flexibility and capabilities of the storage infrastructure. Service providers can now offer their enterprise customers cost-effective, storage services on-demand, freeing them from the time consuming and costly management of storage environments."
