Equipment is delivered to the customer within the same quarter as that when the order was received.

As an example, the lithography vendors have no finished goods inventory, tend to customize their products to each customer's peculiar needs, and have a lead time in excess of 2 quarters.

Many back end vendors do the vast majority of their business on a turns basis with leadtimes under 30 days.

Front end vendors are getting a little better. Even now with record levels of sales, lead times are under 5 months; and if urgent, some equipment can still be delivered on a turns basis.

This more rapid delivery should help temper the cyclicality of the sector as chipmakers will be able to better count on getting what they need when they need it rather than ordering on spec.
