I had lunch yesterday with an Israeli tech company that is publicly traded. It is very apparant to me that part of the unbelievable success of Israeli tech firms is the next to nothing tax rate that they pay. Of course, Israeli citizens pay taxes. But the low corporate tax rate gives them a big advantage in lowering their cost of capital in going after markets. But is would be better to legislate low tax rates than to have corporations shuttle assets around in order to create low rates for themselves. Similarly, the estate tax creates a market for estate planners. Paper pushers. We could have a much more efficient economy by simplifying the tax code. If IRS workers and estate planners had to get real jobs, there would be less of a labor shortage.
