Also from Ace's, more confirmation of lagging P4 performance is found in a post from redpriest:

Just received my December 2000 issue of CGW, and it has this line in it:

"We've been testing Pentium-IV systems for next month's high-end Ultimate Gaming Machine shootout, and the early numbers are provacative. A 1.5 GHz Pentium-IV is about 44% faster than the fastest 866 MHz Pentium-III in thi month's system roundup, using 3D WinBench's Processor Test - which tests CPU performance handling 3D data. But that same Pentium-IV system was only about 11% faster than a Thunderbird Athlon 1.1 GHz on the same test. Given Pentium IV's 36% clock advantage, my guess is that Athlon will fare well against Pentium-IV, given equal clock rates. More on this next month."

Brian Neal of Ace's adds this comment:
Of course, 3D WinBench is not our favorite CPU metric, but given these numbers, one might assume that the two chips will be neck-and-neck, though if DDR is good for the 10% boost pre-release benchmarks have indicated it is, the Athlon will probably top Intel's best in most situations.

To that I would only add that Brian is talking about a 1.1 GHz Athlon equalling a 1.5 GHz P4 using DDR. A 1.2 GHz Athlon, 1.33 GHz Mustang and 1.53 GHz Mustang will deliver 3 knockout blows.
