Good rejoinder, Frank! By the way, did you know that there is a marked difference in the career histories of West Indian immigrants and their descendants than of indigenous African- Americans? West Indians were once slaves too. Yet they tend to go further in education and careers, and to occupy positions of leadership (both Colin Powell and Louis Farrakhan are the sons of West Indian immigrants). One possible explanation is that immigrants are "self- selecting", and therefore more talented and motivated. However, that by itself does not explain how the effect seems to survive at least a couple of generations. It is more like they do not have the same attitudes as native African- Americans, and do not teach them. In any event, it is one of the phenomena which has demonstrated that the effect of race on life fortunes has been overestimated and is waning.........
