And the broker can also call them back in. This is happening to me right now. Edwin and I were trying to figure out what would prompt a broker to send notice that only 20 of 800 shares I shorted were subject to buy-in within a week. Please see Edwin's post, and if you can clarify any of this for us we would greatly appreciate it.
