Tenchusatsu,
What about P4 Xeon, Itanium, McKinley, Tualitin, mobile processors, chipsets, etc.?
P4 core is central to Intel's future. There is nothing in the immediate future to take it's place. If it fails, Intel will have to wait years to recover. You can live on promises only so long.
Mobile processors, mainly of Tualatin variety will do well for some time, IMO, but everything will have to migrate to the P4 core, and if P4 core is not good, it will have tragic consequences for Intel as a company.
Itanium is a nice diversion, but it can't sustain the company if the mainstream is lost.
Since when does the fate of an entire multi-billion dollar corporation rest on a single product introduction?
Since the time it's main product - P6 core product line became uncompetitive. 100% of profits come from this dying product line. A better question would be:
why did Intel wait until the very last minute to refresh its product line? The product transitions from P5 -> P4 core and all prior ones happened while the existing core was still healthy and had some life left.
