KDDI to Reduce Packet Fee for IMT-2000 to 1/100th of Present Level

November 1, 2000 (TOKYO) -- KDDI said that with the advent of the next-generation mobile communication service, the IMT-2000, in 2001, it will reduce its packet transmission fee to as low as 1/100th of the present level.

The IMT-2000 uses the MC-CDMA method. At the present time, the fee is charged by the packet, and the fee for 1 packet (128 bytes) is between 0.1 yen and 0.3 yen. For the moment, the main use of the service is for e-mail transmission, which involves only a small amount of data, and the number of users has been expanding steadily. However, the transmission of music and moving picture data, for which there is a great deal of potential in the future, requires a large volume of data, therefore, the current fee is simply too high, a KDDI official said. (108.66 yen = US$1)
